The national flag is flying at half-mast when Daniel and Anton arrive at the school.
The atmosphere is subdued as they walk in through the main doors. The foyer leads to a cafeteria, where the walls are decorated with diplomas and prizes the students have won. Small groups of children are talking quietly. One girl is sitting in a corner, crying, her face buried in her hands.
There is a photograph of Amanda on a small podium with a candle burning beside it.
A receptionist shows them to an interview room with green velvet curtains, then goes to fetch Lasse Sandahl, Amandaâs adviser.
The door opens, and a man of about thirty-five in jeans and a V-neck sweater comes in. He makes a boyish impression in spite of his thinning hair.
He greets them with a firm handshake, and all three men sit down.
âWe understand you were Amanda Halvorssenâs adviser,â Daniel begins.
âYes.â Lasse sighs loudly. âItâs such a tragedyâimpossible to take in. I keep expecting her to show up in the corridor.â
âHow long had you been her adviser?â Daniel takes out his notebook, clicks his ballpoint pen several times before it decides to cooperate.
âSince she started here.â
âHow well would you say you knew her?â
âPretty well, given how many students we have to advise. I work with everyone studying economicsâeighteen in total.â
âHow would you describe Amanda?â Anton asks.
Lasse thinks for a moment. âAmanda was a lovely girl, and a loyal friend. She was clever, with a good head on her shoulders. She also had a well-developed sense of right and wrong; she often argued in class, and wasnât afraid of a heated discussion. She was into sociology.â He falls silent. He seems genuinely moved by Amandaâs fate, and his voice is subdued when he continues. âI canât believe sheâs gone. She was a person you noticed, and she had a mind of her own. A lot of girls her age donât want to stand out, but Amanda spoke up for what she believed in.â
âDid she have any problems in school that youâre aware of?â Anton asks. âAny enemies?â
Lasse shakes his head. âIâve always regarded Amanda as a popular girl. She had plenty of friends, she and Ebba used to hang out with a bigger group, and the class as a whole got along well. I hear they had a Lucia party at Ebbaâs on Thursday.â
There is a noise from the corridor as a group of students passes by. Even from a distance the sorrowful tone of their conversation is unmistakable.
âWhat about Viktor, her boyfriend?â Daniel says. âAre you his adviser too?â
âNo, heâs in the automotive technology program.â
âBut you know who he is?â
âYes.â
âWhatâs he like as a person?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âHe seems to have a bad reputation,â Anton clarifies.
Lasse hesitates. âI canât comment on that.â
âBut you must have an opinion?â
Lasse changes position on his chair, his gaze slides away toward the window. âHe can be a little . . . volatile,â he admits.
âGo on,â Daniel prompts.
âI donât know if I should speak about a student if Iâm not his adviser .
